Beyond the Résumé

The résumé states it plainly:
architect, a number of years, a number of projects.
What it leaves out:
that some of the drawings were done on trains,
that some of the decisions were made on piers,
and only after the boat had left.

The houses I restored should still be standing.
The cities I left are, presumably, still there.
Statistically speaking,
the places I have stayed outnumber the places I have designed,
the places I have designed outnumber the places I have lived in for long,
and the places I have lived in for long
a suitable sample is still being sought.

People ask: what is your specialty?
I say: windows.
Especially the kind
that, once opened, make a person want to pack.

As for romance, I left the field blank.
The box was too small,
and besides, as far as I know,
it is not a profession one can resign from.
